A block is sawn once, into a run of slabs that will never exist again.
That is the trouble with choosing stone off a sample chip. The chip is an average, and there is no average slab — color, movement and veining all shift down the run, and the piece that ends up on your island is a particular one.
So we hold over a hundred colors standing on the floor in Houston. The choice happens in front of the material, at full size, and the slab you tag is the slab that goes to the saw.
Molten rock cooled slowly enough for the crystals to grow and interlock. That interlock is why it shrugs off a hot pan and a knife, and why the pattern reads as flecks and drift rather than veins. Most of what stands on our floor is granite.
Limestone recrystallised under heat and pressure, which is where the veining comes from. Softer than granite and chemically reactive: it etches where acid touches it and takes a patina. Specified when the look is the point and the client has been told the trade.
Sandstone fused into a single quartz mass. Reads like marble, behaves nearer granite. Hard enough that cutting it is slow and eats tooling — a fabrication problem before it is a price, and one reason we cut it here rather than send it out.
A mitered edge is cut twice at forty‑five degrees and can only be wrong once.

Block to install, one building.
You walk the racks on Hillmont Street and tag the slabs you want. They are numbered, held and pulled for your job — not reordered later from a lot that may not match.
We measure the cabinets that were built, not the ones on the drawing. Seams are agreed on site, so they land where you chose rather than where the tolerance stack put them.
Cut, mitered, edged and polished in-house. Book-matched work is laid out slab against slab and signed off before anything is committed to the saw.
Our crews carry it in and set it. One company answers for the material, the cut and the install — which is one phone number when something needs answering.
The reason to keep a hundred-plus colors standing on the floor is not choice. It is that a container held up in transit should not move a closing date. When material runs late we can put a comparable slab in front of you the same week and keep the crew on the calendar — the difference between a fabricator who stocks and a company that has to order what it sells.
